Calm before the Storm (2007)

Every year the Oktoberfest takes place in the heart of Munich, Germany; every year construction for the biggest beer festival in the world starts 10 weeks before its 2 week duration. Almost every day on my way to work I would cycle past the 31 hectare concrete space where the event takes place and document the state of the site early in the morning before the workers started or photograph in the evening when everybody had gone home.Photographing without seeing any active construction being done, I only witnessed the stages in between – the quiet, solemn and relentless progression of a massive building site.

I was intrigued by the atmosphere of restraint anticipation of the event and the silence that stands in stark contrast to the lively, noisy and crowded beer festival, which sees more than 6 million visitors every year. All this effort for a short burst of life and togetherness, packed into a short spell before it is all over and quiet again.
